One aspect of propane tank safety that people get confused about is where to
store your tank. There is really one major rule to follow when you are dealing
with storage: always keep your tank outdoors. Propane inside the tank is safe
but if it leaks and gets trapped in an enclosed area such as a garage, the area
becomes dangerous. The mixture of propane and oxygen can be lethal.
Another propane tank safety tip is to know when it is time to replace
your tank. In general, a propane tank should be replaced after 12 years because
this is the amount of time it is allowed before it needs to be recertified. To
find out how old your tank is, just look on the side of the collar. If it is
near or over 12 years old, then it should be replaced. Also look for rust on
the tank and if the collar or foot ring are broken off.
