Propane Fire Tables

Propane fire tables have become a pretty popular aesthetic and functional piece in the home. They’re ideal for open yards where you’d like something to help improve the look of your home while also being functional enough to keep everyone warm - and perhaps help with a little BBQ.

Given how popular they’ve become, it’s understandable that a lot of people want to get propane fire tables at the moment. At the same time, there have also been a lot of concerns about these tools and their safety. If you’re thinking about getting one of these tables and have questions about whether or not they are safe, let’s see if we can address some of those concerns.

Are propane fire tables dangerous?

Propane fire tables are seen as a low-maintenance, much safer alternative to having open fire in your yard. They don't produce any smoke or embers that could easily sparkle carelessly and start a fire. And, if there’s a concern, you could easily shut down a fire table’s gas supply.

Since they don’t get as hot as open wood fires, propane fire tables are an impressive and safe option for most open yards. Of course, you have to remember that the ideal application of these fire tables is in an open space. Propane fire tables still produce a bit of carbon monoxide, so you don’t want to confine them.

Can a propane fire pit explode?

It’s possible you’ve heard stories about propane fire tables exploding. However, this is where quality comes in. If you get a fire table certified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and you install it properly, then you shouldn’t have much to worry about.

At the same time, you also want to protect against wet materials getting into the fire. Wet rock, gravel, or concrete can soak up a lot of moisture from rain. When these materials become hot, they burn up and their water turns into steam.  The steam eventually takes up a massive part of the rock, causing an explosion.

So, whenever it rains, be sure to cover your fire table properly and prevent any wet materials from getting in.

Can I cover a propane fire table?

The law requires that fire tables be made from long-lasting and safe materials. However, you should remember that wear and tear happens - especially when the table is outdoors.

By covering your fire table, you can reduce the oxidation process and prolong the table’s lifespan. Even the most durable fire tables can rust over time when they’re exposed to moisture and rain. The sun’s UV light can also affect the table’s look.
