Propane Refill
A propane tank is a strong, resilient container that helps to store liquid propane gas under pressure. Its job is to maintain the propane, protecting it - and, by extension, you - from the weather and extreme elements.
However, even the strongest propane tanks come with limited shelf lives. And once a tank goes bad, then you need more than just a propane refill - you’ll need to change the tank itself.
How long is a propane tank good for?
On average, a propane tank should be qualified for 12 years of work from the day it is manufactured. Note that in some countries, you might be required by law to change your propane tank every 10 years.
Generally, you should be able to get the right information from your dealer to be on the safest side.
How to tell if your propane tank needs to be changed
Usually, the easiest way to check the state of your propane tank will be to look at its handle or collar area. This won’t let you know when the tank will expire, but it will at least indicate when the tank was manufactured. With a little more background information, this will help you to determine how much time is left for the propane tank, and when you should expect to get a replacement.Reading the markings on your propane tank
When you see the propane tanks handle, you’d find a few stamped markings. These markings offer critical information that should indicate your tank’s capacity rating and its origination.
A date will appear on the tank handle, indicating the date of manufacturing. The date is usually written in the Month-Year format, so a tank that was made in April 2022 will read “04-22.”
Propane tanks also come with unique identification stamped on them. These tags are similar to the ID tags put on vehicles, and they help propane dealers to properly track and keep records of every tank in circulation.
You can also find additional markings on the tank that indicate its weight - listed as “TW.” For times when you might have to weigh the tank to gauge how much propane is left, this stamp comes in handy. There’s also a “WC” stamp that indicated the tank’s capacity to store water. It helps you know how much propane can be stored in the tank, so you don’t overfill it.
